Raku.

Picture
Raku-yaki(楽焼), or Raku ware, is a type of japanese pottery.  These raku pieces were thrown on a potters wheel, hand painted, and fired in the traditional raku style.

After glazing, the pieces are placed in a kiln and heated till the glaze has melted and the pieces are glowing red hot, approximately 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.  They are then carefully removed from the kiln immediately and placed on top of leaves in a metal trashcan and covered.  The carbon released from the burning leaves gets trapped on the surface of the raku piece, creating the gorgeous grey tones.  The smoke also gets trapped in the cracks on the surface, a look that has come to define western raku technique.
